Value Creation Across National Borders: PhD defense Jolanda Hessels On November 13, Jolanda Hessels has defended her PhD thesis entitled ‘International Entrepreneurship: Value Creation Across National Borders’. The research in this thesis is focused on providing insight into the economic effects of internationalization of SMEs and new ventures, e.g. in terms of innovation (at the firm-level) and in terms of new venture creation and economic growth (at the economy-wide level). The research also aims to provide insight into factors that affect the decision of SMEs and new ventures to undertake international activity.

Stanford professor Hau Lee awarded Honorary Doctorate Professor Hau Lee has been awarded an honorary doctorate, in recognition of the enormous achievements made in the areas of global supply chains and supply chain management, by the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University has, on the occasion of its 95th Dies Natalis – the anniversary of the founding of Erasmus University – and the 38th anniversary of RSM. Jo van Nunen participates in RTL 7 TV Series on Sustainable Mobility The 8-part TV series ‘Vakwerk NL Duurzame Mobiliteit” will address the crucial need for sustainable mobility to the Netherlands. The series is an initiative of Transumo, who commissioned a national research programme on the topic, headed by Professor Jo van Nunen. The goal is to inform the greater public, in a clear and simple manner, what the transition to sustainable mobility will mean to them and how it may affect them.

Three quarters of CEO income is now variable - Research into financial rewards for top executives reveals new remuneration trends A growing part of the remuneration being paid to CEOs of AEX-listed companies is performance related. On average, in 2007, only a quarter of their compensation packages consisted of a fixed base salary, while the remaining 75% was performance-related. This has come to light in the annual remuneration survey held by Hewitt Associates in cooperation with ERIM Fellow Prof. dr. Gerard Mertens, among 25 selected AEX companies.

A new model for order picking in warehouses On October 23, Mengfei Yu has defended his PhD thesis entitled ‘Enhancing Warehouse Performance by Efficient Order Picking’. The subject of this thesis is order picking processes in warehouses. Yu developed a fast and flexible model to estimate the impact of warehouse layouts, order profiles and operational strategies on the order picking system performance. This model is especially useful for the design phase of an order picking system to provide insight on different design alternatives. The model has been validated by a real life order picking process and therefore can be put directly into practice.

Essays on Office Market Dynamics On October 23, Maarten Jennen has defended his PhD thesis entitled ‘Empirical Essays on Office Market Dynamics’. The dissertation consists of six different papers, all of which evolve around the subject of Office Market Dynamics . They shed a light on important topics such as the impact of agglomeration, density on office rents, and firm performance; the determinants of office rents on a macro level; and the relation between direct and indirect investments in real estate assets.

Wef Country Analysis by Frans Van Den Bosch & Henk Volberda Reports: The Netherlands leads the World in Technology, has improved its Labour Market, but still lags behind in Innovation The World Economic Forum (WEF) publishes a yearly report on the competitive strength of countries. The Erasmus Strategic Renewal Centre is a partner institute to the WEF and collected the data for the Netherlands. Last year, the Netherlands took 10th place, after ranking 4th in 2000 and 8th in 2001 and then dropping out of the Top Ten. But this year, the Netherlands has continued its comeback and reached the No. 8 spot. This rise has resulted from increased efficiency of its labour markets and goods markets; as well as excellence in cutting-edge technology – an area in which the Netherlands is now even the No. 1 in the world. However, the country is still trailing others with respect to innovative strength.

PRIME wins the HP-IAPP Privacy Innovation Technology Award PRIME (Privacy and Identity Management for Europe) has won the HP-IAPP Privacy Innovation Technology Award. PRIME was selected for its successful, extensive project scope and business model. One judge remarked: “This was a monster collaborative project that still focused on what serious, widespread applications of IAM can be. PRIME has proven that what was once thought impossible is now feasible through a multitude of technology levels”. Prof. Piet Ribbers, Alea Fairchild, and Associate Member of ERIM Jimmy Tseng were responsible for the Social and Economic Requirements and Evaluation work package within the PRIME project.

PhD defense Marc Schauten on the Cost of Capital Marc Schauten has defended his PhD thesis entitled ‘Valuation, Capital Structure Decisions and the Cost of Capital’ on October 2. In his thesis, Schauten approaches the capital structure decision as a multi-criteria problem instead of an optimization problem. The main topics of his thesis are: the valuation of excess cash held by large European listed firms and the relation between corporate governance and the cost of debt.

Roosenboom (1973) has been appointed to an endowed chair of Entrepreneurial Finance and Private Equity at the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. Dr. Wendy van der Valk receives Emerald / EFMD Highly Commended Award Van der Valk’s doctoral dissertation, entitled "Buyer-Seller Interaction in Ongoing Service Exchange" has been selected for a Highly Commended Award in the category Operations Management by the EFMD. The dissertation was awarded because of its high relevance for the field of Service Operations Management. Wilco receives the sum of € 208.000,-, starting in February 2009 until February 2012. The NWO-VENI is a grant for young researchers up to 3 years after their defense. A while ago, van den Heuvel, assistant professor at the Econometric Institute, also received an EUR Fellowship.

The Netherlands falls just shy of the Top Ten in the WEF’s Enabling Trade Index The Global Enabling Trade Index, compiled by the World Economic Forum (WEF), is a cross-sectional analysis of the trade conditions found in 118 countries around the world.
