Real-time Planning Support: A Task-Technology Fit Perspective On December 19, Elfriede Krauth has defended her PhD thesis entitled “Real-time Planning Support: A Task-Technology Fit Perspective”. Transport planning is in some aspects not unlike surfing. Logistics is about delivering the right product in the right quantity, at the right place and at the right time. The unpredictable and volatile demand gives planners little time to adjust plans and ensure high efficiency. While there are decision support systems available for calculating the shortest transport route or the optimal order-resource assignment, we know little about how to give this advice in the chaos and unpredictability that characterize the decision making situation in real-time transport.

Empirical Essays on Debt, Equity, and Convertible Securities On December 18, Patrick Verwijmeren has defended his PhD thesis entitled “Empirical Essays on Debt, Equity, and Convertible Securities”. The focus in this thesis is on firms' financing decisions. A question Verwijmeren tried to answer is: Why do some firms issue debt to finance investments, while others issue shares? He further focussed on specific financing instruments (convertible bonds and convertible preferred stock), and examined the drivers of these instruments' designs. Important drivers are tax benefits, the costs of refinancing, the need to reduce managers' opportunities for overinvesting, and the desire to manage earnings.

Why good people do bad things Money – not the root of all evil On December 12, Niki den Nieuwenboer has defended her PhD thesis entitled “Seeing the Shadow of the Self: Studies on Workplace Deviance”. The world is in a financial crisis and people wonder how things could have gotten this far. An often heard augment, made by business people, politicians and academics alike, is that the reward system in the financial services industry is the root cause of all of the world's financial troubles. The research presented in this dissertation contradicts this view. It examines why good people do bad things and finds that the reasons for this should be sought far beyond the financial rewards that an organization gives or a lack of control and compliance, as is often also suggested. Bad behaviour is less deliberate than this. Often it is born out of emotions of helplessness, out of a desire to feel good about oneself or even out of a wish to do good. Because of this common misconception, the traditional ways of fighting corporate malfeasance are largely misguided. The corporate world should not focus on detecting and deterring the evil ways of greedy self-serving individuals, but rather aim at creating environments that help good people to not do bad things. It turns out that it is really rather difficult to never do bad.

Although growing in its propensity, offshoring of R&D is generally viewed as a vehicle for cost reduction, and its influence on the firm’s competitiveness is not yet understood. My dissertation represents perhaps one of the first systematic attempts to examine the terrain of offshoring of R&D. Specifically, interpreted as a part of globalization of R&D, my dissertation illuminates on the link between offshoring of R&D and the firm’s innovative capability and organizational flexibility—the two most important capabilities for the competitive success of high technology firms.

The greatest of leaders have the greatest of visions. Good examples of these great leaders are, for instance, Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. However, communicating inspiring visions is not only the territory of politicians: In organizational settings the ability to inspire those around you by painting a picture of the future as you see it, may be as crucial as in the political arena. This book focuses on how bussiness leaders can effectively communicate visions to motivate subordinates.
